Sir Mark Weinberg has a long and distinguished career in the insurance industry.
He started his business career by forming Abbey Life Assurance Company in 1961 and in 1971, he founded Allied Dunbar Assurance (now called Zurich Financial Services), which grew to become the largest unit-linked life assurance company in the UK.
He is now a Life President of St. James’s Place plc, the wealth management group which he co-founded in 1991 and today has 1,600 financial advisers and is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
In 2007, he became the founding Chairman of the Pension Insurance Corporation Holdings, a leading provider of risk management solutions for defined benefit pension schemes.
After acting as an adviser on insurance affairs to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry he became the founding Deputy Chairman of the Securities and Investment Board, the predecessor to the Financial Services Authority, from its inception.
After practising as a barrister in South Africa, he received his Master of Laws at the London School of Economics. He is an Hon. Bencher of Grays Inn and a Governor Emeritus of the London School of Economics.
He is the author of Weinberg and Blank on Take-overs and Mergers, the standard legal text-book on the subject.
